I took it as obvious (wrongly) that we do not have the mineral resources to make use of electricity generated.

It isn’t possible to have an solar powered system functioning outside a hydrocarbon based infrastructure. Electricity of itself is virtually useless without all the whirry whizzy things we have to put it to work.
