a block of land has value only in the context of the energy that can be extracted from it
ie — if you farm it by hand, then the energy extraction rate is ‘x’
if you farm it by machine, then the energy extraction rate is x, x 50
if you buy it just to look at, then your energy support to enable you to do that comes from elsewhere — -ie you are rich enough in energy terms to allow that lifestyle. Somebody else is paying your bills.
There are no ‘products’ that have ‘nothing to do with energy’ — None.
Land is a product of energy imparted by natural forces over time. A tree embodies energy extracted from the land it grows on. As you do too.
All energy can be reduced to calorific values. A money unit buys x calories. You can google the calories in a gallon of gas if you want to. The calories in a can of baked beans is on the back of the can.
You buy energy.
the level of energy in a gallon of petrol has thrown our society sideways because it has given us an unbalanced notion of what energy is and what it does. We think we will have cheap energy forever. We won’t.
1 gallon of petrol gives you the energy output of 50 men working a 10 hour day
Divide $1 worth of baked beans between 50 men and see how much work you get out of them.
This isn’t my ‘opinion’, this is available infornation if you want to read it up elsewhere.
I’ve spelled this out because your views on it are commonplace. I am just pointing out in simple terms why and how they are wrong. I hope they register because it it is important to everyone.
as well as making me sound like a pompous knowitall — -but check it out for yourself, don’t take my word for it.
refute any of it that you can — -I want it to be wrong too.
